Paul Thomas had been impressed with the two seemingly rich and spoilt teenagers ever since Pepper had made them put on masks before coming inside. He’d been more impressed that they’d put him and his family in the crossfire without him noticing. Neither teen had shared much about their families. Instead, they had slowly drawn information from his family until his kids had finally relaxed. John and Gemma had been more subdued than he would have expected, but then they’d just come off twenty-four hours flying and had landed in the Twilight Zone. Looking down at the map Pepper had been pointing to, he could see her reasoning and suspected she was spot on. She obviously had been thinking through the scenario, while he hadn’t. He was a gunnery sergeant and should have been paying more attention. If she was right, and he was reasonably sure she was, then the family had to get off the peninsula. He wondered what options she would suggest. Having made up his mind, he said, “Seven, if you don’t mind.”

Pepper said, “It complicates things, but that’s OK. Tiff and I are already prepared if we have to bug out. We have two kayaks in our room and plan to paddle up the coast, then along the Hawkesbury River till we meet my dad. I’d imagine the total trip will be maybe a hundred-and-fifty kilometres. We can use ours to get you to the other side of the harbour, but then you’d be stuck without your gear and without even the protection of the hotel. If the population of infected continues to grow as it has, then there could be as many as fifty thousand in Sydney alone by tomorrow morning. You could possibly steal a car and get out of town on the back roads, but I wouldn’t do that unless I knew the route like the back of my hand.

“My dad loves apocalyptic fiction, but almost always the good guys and the bad both have guns. We don’t have the number of guns here in Australia that there are in the US. Unfortunately, half those outside of our military who do have them, aren’t always the nicest of people. The other half are mostly law enforcement, and they’ve already been decimated by the infection. One of the reports said over two hundred officers had been infected so far, and that’s just in the inner suburbs. It wasn’t mentioned in the report, but I’m sure I saw several of the infected in that big group wearing police uniforms, and one was carrying a gun. I suspect the infected will succeed in crossing the bridge sometime during the night. If you want to, then you can come with us. If that happens, we’ll need to get more kayaks or maybe a canoe or two.”

Tiffany said, “Where will you get them from with all this going on?”

“We’ll have to steal some, I know where the hire places are from my research this morning. Another option is to steal a larger boat.
